Modern Interior Design Using Glass Block

Modern Design

New York, New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia

Glass Block has truly progressed to stay in step with the needs and desires of the modern home owner.

Originally, Glass Block was considered for those industrial areas that required brick wall construction , but still needed light to be able to enter the area.  This industrial history of glass block has stayed in the minds of some and carried a misconception of the modern use of glass block today.Colored Glass Block modern design

Today, the versatility of Glass Block has opened up great opportunities for modern interior design. With the modern shapes and color alternatives of Glass Block, many have embraced the unique aesthetics of Glass Block in rooms such as Home offices, Home Entertainment Centers, and Living Rooms in open floor plans.

There is no better way to demonstrate the use of Glass Block diffusing color and light than observing modern artists that have used this versatile material to its extreme. Just one example is  Jim Campbell working with the University of California on a Glass Block display simulating ocean waves. In one particular piece of art, Campbell uses 25 white LED lights mounted within each glass block and these lights are controlled by an electronic circuit to create an overall moving image of ocean waves with a resolution of 1200 pixels.

Although the average home owner may not go to this level of design, there is so much that Glass Block has to offer. Remodeling projects in modern homes would be an example of a more practical application. As Modern Home Design states, “The use of glass block opens up new possibilities in creating a spacious and light rooms, because they perfectly reflect light, but are less transparent than ordinary window as a visible image is blurred and masked. That is why they are used in modern interiors, which is a shortage of light and space.”

In addition to the aesthetic versatility of Glass Block, there are also the advantages of easy installation, energy efficiency and weather resistant material qualities. If you would like to explore any of these in further detail, please call us. We have been installing Glass Block nationwide for over 20 years and love to share our experience.

So when you are considering changes in your living space, do not overlook the versatility of Glass Block. This incredibly practical material will enhance any modern interior design.
