Glass blocks are common in commercial establishments such as restaurants, bars and other commercial buildings. They have benefits other than just looking good, but looking good is usually sufficient enough. Glass blocks are most commonly used  as walls/partitions, bars, and windows. They let a great deal of natural light into the restaurants and bars which both saves money and looks more appealing. This diner in Edison, New Jersey was undergoing some renovations and had a desire to make their establishment a little more attractive and change the design a little bit. They did just that using our ever-so-versatile glass blocks.

The Menlo Park Diner in Edison, New Jersey is located on Route 1 and has been around for a long time. They had contacted us during their search for window alternatives as they were looking to undergo slight renovations. We ended up supplying and installing all of the glass block that covers the entire front and part of the sides of this diner. The front of the diner is facing East so in the early morning hours when the sun hits these glass blocks the diner lights up like a Christmas tree. Additionally, during the sunset the colors flow and bounce off creating a nice color wave both inside and outside of the diner. Inside, the sunlight makes the diner brighter than the lights inside can, not to mention the glass block work looks amazing and still together doing its job.

The owner of the diner thanked us and complemented us on a job well done all these years ago. We are more than happy to oblige when requests like these come in because its exciting to see how businesses incorporate our glass block into their design ideas while also taking advantage of their functionality. We recently visited the diner and the blocks look as good as ever (the food is pretty good too) and actually noticed a few people glancing up at the bright glass blocks on their way inside.

We are thrilled that this diner decided to use our glass blocks and will be anxiously waiting for our next one.

Many coffee chains such as Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Tim Hortons have upgraded their locations with drive-thru lanes. This not only increases revenues by ease-of-entry but allows customers to choose whether to wait on line inside or stay in the car for a quicker grab and go. These drive-thru windows are a big thing for every fast food restaurant obviously, and coffee joints realized that and soon incorporated it themselves. A Dunkin Donuts in Scotch Plains, NJ was doing some renovations to make their drive-thru better for the employees and ended up doing just that.

Scotch Plains, NJ can get really nippy in the colder months of the year, more so than some other towns due to the strong wind gusts it receives. The owner of this particular Dunkin Donuts had searched looking for a way to help make the drive-thru a better experience for the employees. The problem here was that during the Fall and Winter months, and during windy days, snow, and rain, the employees working the drive-thru were often faced with direct wind blowing right in their direction. Constantly opening up the window to serve the customers led to a lot of employees being too cold and never really getting to warm up. There was nothing blocking or slowing down the wind or weather from going directly at the employees in full force.

The owner of this particular Dunkin Donuts found out about glass blocks and reached out to us regarding this drive-thru. The owner wanted to know if there was something we can do to blockade the employees and drive-thru window from the direct gusts of wind, and we certainly said of course! We ended up explaining that a glass block wall can be built that would essentially act as a solid brick wall, blocking the air and weather, and also as a decorative instrument due to glass block’s natural aesthetics.

We at Eastern Glass Block had gone to this location and built an 8′ x 13′ wall using Vue glass blocks, which are completely transparent to allow maximum light to shine through. The glass block wall now sits beautifully on an already existing brick divider in between two pillars. The owner was impressed with how quickly the wall was built and how good it looked. She even told us some customers had asked about the wall as well. The employees also noted that the glass block wall is doing its job and doing it well. There is no longer any harsh wind gusts hitting them and they now have protection from the coming weather as well.

Glass blocks are frequently used in restaurants and commercial applications but even we have to admit this was our first glass block wall for a drive-thru.

Winter Weather and Glass Blocks

The cold Fall months will soon become the colder Winter months, and with that things change. One of the things affected by the colder weather and low temperatures, other than the real fun things like mowing the lawn and painting the deck, are exterior glass block projects.

EXTERIOR_01

Glass blocks installed in interior spaces are obviously not affected by the cold temperatures and sometimes harsh Winter weather, but exterior spaces are. For starters, there are only so few hours in the day where the natural sunlight sticks around before going back down making 4:30pm feel like 9pm. Additionally, when the snowy and freezing rain weather comes along, it leaves even fewer days good enough to install glass blocks into exterior spaces such as basement windows, entryways and other exterior window spaces. Glass blocks can be installed in the Winter months, but it isn’t as easy.

We highly recommend that those who wish to get a glass block project started, or those who wish to get their glass block finished in time, to do so before the weather and temperature limits the number of suitable days available.

A benefit of glass blocks for the colder seasons is that they insulate much better than regular single-pane windows. This keeps the inside of you home or business feeling warmer thanks to a lesser amount of the hot air escaping. Concurrently, is also keeps the ice cold air from seeping into cracks and windows that aren’t 100% flush at a much higher rate. Our glass blocks can also come in handy when snow piles up near the foundation of the house. The sun may melt some of the snow away for weeks creating a small but constant water attack against the basement windows. Glass block basement windows act as actual bricks in a sense that water won’t seep through like it could with regular windows.

Eastern Glass Block is a local distributor of all Pittsburgh Corning glass block products. Winter season is slowly approaching and glass blocks can be a major benefit in more ways than one, but be sure not to wait around before the seasons make it harder! Give us a call at 800-635-1226 or email us at egboffice@easternglassblock.com  so we can help you with your projects.
