Transforming This Long Island Apartment One Glass Block At A Time (Part 1)

When you have an older style apartment and want to keep it that way through remodeling, it can be difficult to find what you’re looking for without sacrificing from the overall design theme. Some people call past styles “outdated” or “boring”, but when used correctly in the perfect design theme those words are simply stated – incorrect. In this particular instance we have a couple, we’ll call them Jill and Bill, who have exactly this: an idea to maintain the older look of their soon-to-be “new and improved” studio apartment. Jill and Bill called us looking for that hard to find glass block style and needless to say they’ve found just what they were looking for! Read on to see how Eastern Glass Block will help transform Jill and Bill’s idea from conceptual to physical.

Jill and Bill live in Florida and Long Island. They move back and forth between the two states and had decided to transform their Long Island apartment into two studio-style apartments. Bill has a passion for antiques and was adamant at the idea of using glass blocks as the key to the division of the apartment. As it stands now, there is a small hallway in the middle of the apartment under an old-style skylight that is all original.

This hallway (shown below) is where the glass block is going to be located. It will act as a privacy wall to separate”Apartment A” from “Apartment B”. Just in case you were thinking “What about the main door?”, well there is already two doors, one for each apartment.

Jill and Bill had the idea to use a glass block wall in the middle of this hallway, which is directly under a skylight (below). The windows in this apartment are located on the East and West sides so light comes in all day long, one of the reasons for wanting glass block in the middle. What Bill had a concern about was the privacy offered by a glass block wall. When I arrived at the apartment and showed Jill and Bill the sample of glass block we wanted to use they couldn’t be happier. Unlike the glass blocks they’ve seen in many windows and showers, they needed one a little more opaque, a little more private and we had just the thing. Once they knew the glass block wall would allow maximum light, be secure and private there was nothing else for us to do…yet.

2 Most Common Ways To Use Color Glass Blocks

Glass block has a naturally aesthetic look to it that has been around for decades. Those who were around for its inception into homes still enjoy what it has to offer in terms of actual benefits and looks. For those who aren’t as familiar with it, many of our articles highlight the benefits glass blocks offer architecturally and how it has been used. You can pretty much use it anywhere and although many people like the classic clear, somewhat distorted look, there are a good number of people who enjoy the colors glass blocks come in too. Here are the 2 most common ways color glass blocks can be used in your home design.

Glass Block Windows

As mentioned above, most people are satisfied with glass block windows without color. The other group of people who enjoy a little color show a little more boldness in their creativity. A glass block window in a home will catch the eyes of bystanders and onlookers, but a glass block window with color will force them to observe and examine the window like the piece of art it actually is. Colored glass blocks stand out especially when the sun hits those blocks. With the nice Summer weather we are now enjoying, the sun will make those color blocks sparkle from the outside. On the inside, the room will glare with the color of blocks in that window. Not only will the room be very bright from the non-colored glass blocks, the color glass blocks will add a brightness and a color shadow too. It would be like a stained glass window, only much brighter.

Glass Block Shower

Even a little glass block shower can be big. They can help you remodel even the tiniest of bathrooms by maximizing space using a walk-in design. There are multiple colors to choose from for the people who want and like to match decor in a room. For the purpose of a shower wall, matching the curtains or tiles with a color glass block can really be a difference maker in overall appearance. Whether that matching comes in the form of a few color blocks placed sporadically throughout a mostly non-color glass block wall, or if the glass block wall is entirely color, the bathroom would be an inviting room similar to a living room.

While these are only two design options, the number of colors available are large enough to make either of these glass block ideas completely unique and personalized. What has become increasingly popular are glass block windows mixing styles and sizes. Now more recently, homeowners have taken it a step further and mixed in sizes, styles and color blocks to create something you can’t find in any book, brochure or store. It is truly a great way to personalize your home or any room with our favorite color or color schemes.

A Homeowner’s “Swiss Army Knife”: Glass Block

As you may know, the many uses of glass blocks are clearly represented via photographs or just by the naked eye. One can clearly walk by and say “Oh, that’s a glass block basement window” or “look at the glass block transom”. However, although those are clear interpretations of its use to the homeowner, they do more than that. Just like a Swiss Army knife can do many things, so can our glass blocks; just look at the Battista’s story below.

Mr. and Mrs. Battista live in Havertown, PA, a suburban town a little West of Philadelphia. They frequently enjoy their time out in their backyard during the Spring, Summer and some early Fall months, except those enjoyable days were often cut short or ruined altogether thanks to Mother Nature. Rainy weather and extreme wind had caused their open backyard patio some trouble as it was constantly wet or frequently too windy. Even if it wasn’t raining too hard, the wind blew it all toward their patio despite having a roof. On days where rain wasn’t the primary problem, strong winds blew everything not named furniture around. There seemed to be no winning with Mother Nature this time, but then the Battistas called us looking for a solution which we were happy to provide for them.

Last year we completed a job for a Dunkin’ Donuts in Scotch Plains, NJ, and the Battistas had an almost identical situation which glass block could remedy. So, just like we did for the Dunkin’ Donuts employees, we suggested that we build them a glass block wall. The glass block wall, being sturdy and water-resistant, would not only act as a solid wall but also, keep the rain away from the patio and stop the wind from converging onto the patio. In the Dunkin’ Donuts it did the same thing; blocked the really chilly wind from hitting the drive-thru workers and stopping the rain from getting them wet during open hours. As mentioned before, these glass blocks can be and are frequently used for multiple reasons, even some as simple as a good windbreaker.

We built the Battistas an L-shaped glass block wall using Decora glass blocks, which allow the most light with added privacy and a little IceScapes glass blocks because they wanted it to be a little “different”, which we’re all for. A cool summer breeze still has the opportunity to get over the top of the wall and create a cross-breeze, natural light will still brighten up the patio, water will no longer be a problem and now the patio is a little more private. Mr. and Mrs. Battista loved the way the glass blocks looked and were happy to know that Mother Nature won’t shorten their relaxation time out in the back. People who see this wall would most likely think it’s just a nice glass block wall, whereas on top of it being that, it also plays the part of a windbreaker, weather-resistant barrier and giver of piece of mind.
